Chalmers Vermentino

The Chalmers Vermentino is bright and fresh, and designed to be drunk young, with white florals, Meyer lemon, white stone fruits, pine nuts and salty sea air. It is light to medium bodied with a fine and racy mouth feel perfect with fish and chips or a plate of pork dumplings.

Vermentino was one of the first varieties that we imported to Australia in the late 90’s in search of climate-apt varieties for warm to hot growing regions. Originating from the northern regions of Italy, its suitability to perform even in the warmest of Australian wine regions was very promising. Our first vintage of Vermentino was in 2004 and since then has become the core white wine in the our Chalmers range.

Part of the initial plantings at our Heathcote vineyard in 2009, our Vermentino is planted on the more fertile lower slopes of the famous Red Cambrian soils, between 150-170m. Producing fruit of exceptional quality, we pick on the earlier side to capture the more mineral and focused character of the variety with great freshness. Fermented in stainless steel tanks with natural yeast, it sits on fine lees for 6-10 months depending on the vintage to add some texture and complexity to the palate.
