Chalmers Piedirosso
Chalmers Piedirosso is a slight departure from the usual Chalmers red wines, with its dark red and purple fruits of blackberry and blood plum, it shows complex spices and dried herbs, new leather, licorice allsorts and a generous mouthfeel that pushes into a mineral iodine finish. A wine that intense and rich on the nose while on the palate show freshness and giving a sense of being light on its feet.
We first imported Piedirosso in 2015 as a promising candidate in Heathcote for a medium to full bodied red wine, not too dissimilar to what the regions already familiar with. Grown in Campania Italy, it’s a variety that shows deep and sometimes dark fruits but still relatively light abd perfumed. It performs perfectly in the top block of our Heathcote vineyard comprising of rocky complex array of different geological material.
The first wine produced in our Project range was in 2018 with the first commercial release under the Chalmers range in 2021, a variety that took a little while to work out the style of wine that worked with its new adopted home. Hand picked and wild fermented in stainless steel on whole berries, it receives extended maceration post fermentation to help build and integrate tannic structure. Unfiltered and unfined this is a wine that benefit with age or airing in a decanter.
